John Hope Gateway Pools at Edinburgh Botanic Gardens

The cascade pools at the new John Hope Gateway had leaked from the time they were constructed and this required a large-scale re-lining project for the Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh.

Water Gems won the contract to redesign the lining system, and to create a walkway so that there was access for the window cleaners

The work involved removing large amounts of pea gravel as well as the stainless steel guttering at the base of the windows and large amounts of unnecessary concrete.

Once this was done, a very accurate re-lining job was needed.  We used the Firestone EPDM system supplied by Gordon Low Products Ltd that we now have so much experience with.  There was some quite complicated strapping and joining needed but all went well and the results are pretty much perfect.

The brimfull pools now look lovely and the cascades run as they were designed to, over the granite walls. The water in the top pools highlights the outlines and as it travels over the weirs it darkens the granite which gives an unusual and interesting effect.

We also put in a simplified pumping and filtration system which keep the water clear and free of algae.
