The 2010 show garden we created at Gardening Scotland won us a gold medal and the coveted Best in Show title. We designed and built an ambitious structure from rebar – reinforcing bars used in the construction industry.
Woven into wide ribbons, the rebar formed a show-stopping platform, shelter and sculptural tailpiece like nothing Gardening Scotland had ever seen before. It was positioned in the middle of a generous water feature and then surrounded by lush planting designed by Carolyn Grohmann, including a bank of wildflowers.
Such was the ambition of this project, a police escort was required to get the structure from our yard on the Dalmeny Estate to the show ground at Ingliston. Most satisfying of all was the purchase of the rebar structure by a family on the first day of the show and its subsequent transportation (by police escort of course) to their garden near Aviemore following the show.
We recycled all the materials used in the garden in projects we worked on subsequent to the show and so there was very little wastage indeed. It was an exhilarating project for everyone involved and an experience we will never forget.
